San Teodoro lagoon, the home of pink flamingos in Sardinia
Sardinian people is proud of the lagoon of San Teodoro because is one of the greatest natural treasures of the island and there are a lot of reasons to visit during a stay here. First of all this is the home of the pink flamingos, beautiful birds that we have chosen as the Obiettivo Vacanza logo.
The flamingo, in fact, is considered a symbol of positivity and elegance since ancient times and in Egypt was an animal sacred to Ra, the Sun God.
Staying in San Teodoro and spend some time to admire these migratory birds is an experience we strongly recommend, especially because the peculiar set of the lagoon is perfectly matched with the majestic and beautiful pink flamingos.
The bird watching paradise in Sardinia
The San Teodoro lagoon is a balanced ecosystem characterized by the green Mediterranean scrub and by many endemic species of plants and animals that can be watched following the paths delimited by wooden fences. The lagoon can be visited entering from the north or the south side of the coast, just behind the beach La Cinta, is protected by the municipality of San Teodoro and is undoubtedly a place to explore slowly, getting ready for a dive into the most authentic nature.
The marked trail that visitors can follow is also useful to define the areas where redevelopment projects are underway and therefore not accessible to the public.
Would you know an oddity about the flamingos? In Sardinian language they are called “genti arrubia”, red people, a respectful and noble name for these birds that have trigged the imagination of writers like Grazia Deledda, who described them as: "Birds never seen, with iridescent wings, rise from the pond, as the water gushing out, drawing in the sky a kind of rainbow: perhaps a mirage."
Every year, in September, there is a festival to celebrate this oasis in Sardinia, an event that offers excursions, guided tours by boat and bicycle, tastings of local food and activities for children, an appointment that has the aim to enhance the entire area surrounding the lagoon.
Come and greet the pink flamingos in San Teodoro, this encounter will be a good omen for your tourist experience in Sardinia.
